Thursday's Thirteen #6

The reason I started blogging was to share my journey with my family and friends about the things that I want to have completed in my life before I turn 40 years old...well...I've done a lot of blogging but not much action on the 40 Before 40 list! So I'm sitting a goal of....

13 Things that I Would Like to Complete (from my 40s list) by Spring:

  1. Take Networking at Church and discover my God given Spiritual Gifts.
  2. Get a Pedicure...especially before flip flop season!
  3. Lose 15 pounds of the 50/75 pounds that I would like to lose.
  4. Try a yoga class
  5. Make a household inventory notebook including pictures, serial numbers, etc for insurance purposes.
  6. Purchase 1001 Books to Read Before I Die...compile a list of the book I'd like to read from this list.
  7. Get a massage.
  8. Write will especially a will for the guardianship fo my children if something would happen to Sean and me.
  9. Get finances in order & have a good dent in what needs to be paid off.
  10. Try a pilates class.
  11. Start a monthly date night with my hubby!
  12. Bake 10 items from Martha Stewart's Baking Handbook.
  13. Start organizing garage.

Some of these things are what I would call a luxry and some are things that I should already have started or completed. I think that I will post this list in my sidebar and cross them off as I complete them!

Works-For-Me-Wednesdays (Sorting Photos)

I love to take pictures of my family and put those memories in scrapbooks. I am, however, way behind in getting those pictures put in the scrapbooks. One way that I sort and organize the pictures before I scrap them is to sort them into boxes...I have one box for each of my children. Then I sort the pictures in each box by "categories" SO when I'm ready to scrap those memories, they will be sorted! It works for me! (This is all of the pictures that are from a film....not the digital!)

The kids enjoy pulling down the boxes and looking through their pictures.

Tackle It Tuesday #5 (Dance Costumes)

This weekend is my daughters' first dance competition. They will be in classes on Saturday and Sunday morning so I will have time to touch up any costumes etc. BUT I will not have time to stone several of the costumes. So my tackle for today and the rest of the week is:

1. Repack dance bag and make sure that all costume pieces, hair pieces, etc. are packed away.

2. Pack for the weekend. And be ready to leave Friday after they get out of school.

3. Schedule my referees for Futsal...can't forget this! I have Futsal games scheduled for Saturday and Sunday and I need to make sure that I have referees to cover all of the games.

4. Stone "Big Noise"...this costume has 310 rhinestones that need to be glued on the costume!

5. Finish stoning "Rainbow"

6. Finish stoning "Journey"...this costume has between 70 and 90 stones scattered at the skirt of the costume.

7. Stone "Shop Around"...oh yeah, I forgot that another Mom offered to stone SJHs costume...need to be sure to bring it to Dance this evening.

8. Stone belt buckle on both GLH and SJHs Shimmy Costume.

Let's see...am I missing anything else? Got fishnets stone, Jump in the Line, Life of the Party for both...oh yes

9. Stone the straps of SJHs "Life of the Party"

Barrettes are done...bags for Shop Around are done....

I think that's all....I will post pictures of the costumes after they are done being stoned so you can see the great costumes that they are wearing!

Wish me luck in getting it all done!!!!

Networking....Spiritual Gifts

One of my goals to complete by the time I turn 40 was to take the Networking Class at Church and to discover what my Spiritual Gifts are...today is the first day of that class. I motivated to take this class after I read this quote:

"When I stand before God at the end of my life, I would hope that I would not have a single bit of talent left, and could say ‘I used everything you gave me.’ ~Erma Bombeck

Update: Sunday evening after the class, I returned home & took the spiritual gifts assessment. I discovered that my gifts are:

1. Helps: The divine enablement to accomplish practical and necessary tasks that free up, support, and meet the needs of others. People with this gift: serve behind the scenes wherever needed to support the gifts and ministries of others, see the tangible and practical things to be done and enjoy doing them, sense God's purpose and pleasure in meeting everyday responsibilities, attach spiritual value to practical service, enjoy knowing that they are making it possible for others to do what God has called them to do.

2. A tie between Knowledge & Wisdom:

Knowledge is the divine enablement to bring truth to the body through a revelation or biblical insight. People with this gift: receive truth which enables them to better serve the body, search the Scriptures, understand truth, gain knowledge that at times is not attained by natural means but revealed to them by God, have an unusual insight or understanding that serves the church, communicate truth for teaching and practical use.

Wisdom is the divine enablement to effectively apply spiritual truth to meet a need in a specific situation. People with this gift: focus on the unseen consequences in determining the next steps to take, receive an understanding of what is necessary to meet the needs of the body, provide divinely given solutions in the midst of conflicts and confusion, hear the Spirit provide direction for God's best, apply spiritual truth in practical ways.

3. Craftsmanship: The divine enablement to creatively design and/or construct items to be used for ministry. People with this gift: work with wood, cloth, paints, metal, glass, and other raw materials, make things that increase the effectiveness of other's ministries, enjoy serving with their hands to meet tangible needs, design and build tangible items and resources for ministry use, work with different kinds of tools and are skilled with their hands.

My forth and fifth are the gift of Hospitality and Administration.

We will learn tomorrow about the cautions, traits and distinctive of each of our gifts.

Look....I have one item crossed off my list....

1. Clean/Organize Garage
2. Clean/Organize Attic
3. Lose 50 pounds---75 would be better but 50 would be great! (I have lost 8 pounds so far!)

My Saturday

Greetings...I started this post and it has been sitting in my blogger as a draft because I needed to upload pictures...but didn't get them uploaded because of a VERY busy weekend!

Today is our Showcase for Competition Dance, it's a chance for all of the girls to run through their dance numbers in costume, for the teachers to see if there are any changes to be made, to test props, etc. Here is some pictures that I took this morning...Enjoy...

In addition to the showcase, the boys had basketball that morning as well as a birthday sleepover that evening for CSH's birthday....here pictures of his birthday cake....very cool, huh?

The cake was devoured by 8 teenager boys that evening & early morning. They stayed up to 4:30 in the morning playing XBox 360 and eating! The ball in the middle is 3D...the lady who makes our cakes put another cake shaped like 1/2 of a ball in the center...she does a great job! Plus they taste like heaven!

Friday's Feast #3-1.19.07

Happy Friday...I'm late in posting again today! I have been extra busy with soccer and dance. We have our preview performance tomorrow morning with dance and I'm making sure that all the pieces of the costume are together as well as working on stoning (gluing rhinestones on the costumes)-a lot of work still to be done next week, which will probably be my Tackle it Tuesday post because we are leaving Friday night for a competition!

Here's my fifth Friday's Feast post! I like this one...fun questions!

Appetizer

Which television shows do you just refuse to miss?

Well...I refuse to miss a lot of show, thanks to my wonderful dual DVR. We are able to record 2 shows at each time slot thanks to this wonderful little gadget! Here is what we record each week (and each day):

  1. Martha
  2. Rachael Ray
  3. Mission:Organization
  4. Get Color
  5. CSI: Miami
  6. NCIS
  7. The Unit
  8. Boston Legal
  9. Criminal Minds
  10. Smallville
  11. Lost
  12. CSI: New York
  13. CSI
  14. Grey's Anatomy
  15. Men in Trees
  16. Numbers
  17. Close to Home
  18. Desperate Housewives
  19. Survivor
  20. The Bachelor
  21. We are currently watching Grease: Your the One that I Want
  22. American Idol
  23. Amazing Race

As you can see, we watch a little too much TV. I am using working downstairs when the first four programs are on, if I think about it, I usually turn the TV and listen and watch while I'm working. I will go through the shows on DVR, to review or watch something that I might have missed. I can usually do this in about 30 minutes each evening when I go to bed.

The other shows, I usually watch (I hardly ever watch a program when it is airing) while I'm folding laundry or working on a big project where the TV is that has a DVR. The other day, I reorganized my bedroom and caught up on all of the episodes. We have the DVR set to record only the new episodes. It's a good thing! Plus, I can watch an hour program in under 45 minutes!

Soup

Who did you last speak to on the telephone?

Rodeth...she called me to ask what size rhinestones we are putting on our fishnets for dance!

Salad

How many pillows do you keep on your bed?

I have 6 pillows...2 that match the sheets and 4 with pillow shams, I also have 5 throw pillows on our bed as well.

Main Course

Name one addition to your computer (software, hardware, etc.) that you'd love to have.

I would love to have Photoshop! In fact, I was just talking with my friend, Michele, today about Photoshop. She has it and is doing amazing things with the photos that she takes!

Dessert

What is your favorite foreign food?

That's are really hard question...I enjoy Italian, Mexican, Chinese (Asian type foods), etc, etc! I really do enjoy Beef Suchewan with Fried Rice..in fact, I had that today for lunch (blew my diet!). Oh well, it was shoot to heck last week with being iced in!

Happy Birthday to CSH!

My oldest is 14 years old today! Oh my....where has the time gone?

Works For Me Wednesday #4 (OAMC Food Coop)

After last week's post and this Monday's Menu Planner, I had some fellow bloggers ask about OAMC...Once A Month Cooking. I thought that I would share how our OAMC Food-Coop works and share some recipes. I actually have our Food Exchange Meeting on Thursday. There are six wonderful ladies in our group...we meet every 4 to 6 weeks, depending on what's happening to exchange our meals and plan for the next month. Each lady will prepare 2 meals, we divide those meal in half...for example, I am making Honey Pecan Chicken this month, the recipe calls for 8 Chicken breast, when I pack it up to freeze, I will put 4 chicken breast in the zip-lock bag instead of 8...this will give most of the families in our group 2 meals...I have to serve 8 pieces for my family. The same with a lasagna, for example, instead of preparing it in a 9 x 13 pan, it's prepared in an 8 x8 pan, therefore, 2 meals. When we meet this Thursday, I am bringing 12 bags of Honey Pecan Chicken and 12 pans of Farmer's Casseroles. When I go home after our planning meeting, I will have 24 plus meals (I had originally wrote that we got 36 meals...my mind is frozenfrom the ice storm!) in my freezer for the next month...

Why does this work for me? We are a very busy family of four, before OAMC, I would spend easily $200.00 week on groceries and we would eat out 2 or 3 times a week because of our busy evenings. Since OAMC, I have an inventory sheet of what is in my freezer, I plan our menus based on our activities...if we are all gone one evening, it's usually a crock pot meal...one of the bags of chicken meals can be placed in the CP and will be ready anytime we get home to eat. It also has saved me lots of $$$$, we have a budget of $125.00 to prepare our meals for that month. I am getting 24 meals for $125.00!!! All I need to pick up at the grocery store is sides, lettuce for salads, snacks (fresh fruit/veggies, cereal bars, etc), cereal for breakfast and milk. No major entrees to be purchased. I am saving about $600.00 a month on groceries! That works for me!!! And what's more, is my family enjoys having dinner on the table each evening and not waiting for Mom to figure out what we are going to have!

This month my OAMC Food Coop meals are Honey Pecan Chicken and Farmer's Casserole. (Both recipes are from the book Don't Panic-Dinner's in the Freezer by Martinez, Howell & Garcia) Below is the recipe and freezing instructions for anyone who would like to start the OAMC concept...you don't need a group, just double a recipe once week...eat one and freeze the other. Before long you will have meals in the freezer ready and waiting for you! It's really a great concept....I don't know why I didn't start this earlier!

Oh...one more thing....I keep a notebook with a copy of all of my Freezer Recipes (even my own so I will have a record of what we have tried & liked) so I will know how to prepare them when it's time to cook them. Also, if someone else cooked it, you have the recipe to make on your own, if it's one of your families favorite! The first page of the notebook is my inventory sheet and the remainder of the notebook is divided into sections like Beef, Chicken, Soups, Casseroles, etc.

Honey Pecan Chicken

For the sauce: Melt butter in medium saucepan over low heat. Saute shallots in butter until tender. Add orange juice and whiskey over medium heat, and continue cooking until liquid is reduced by one half. Add cream. Continue cooking until slightly thickened. Add honey, vinegar, salt and pepper. Cool. Freeze separately. using freezer bag method.

Serving day instructions:
Thaw chicken breast and cream sauce. Mix chopped pecans and flour together. Dredge chicken breast in flour mixture. Heat a small amount of olive oil in large skillet. Pan fry chicken breast until golden brown and cooked through. Heat sauce over low heat until warm; do not boil.

1/4 cup green onions, sliced
4 beaten eggs (or 1 cup frozen egg product)
1 12 oz can evaporated milk
1/4 t pepper
1/8 t salt

Cooking day instructions:
Grease a 2 quart square baking dish. Arrange potatoes evenly in bottom of dish. Sprinkle with cheeses, ham, green chiles, and green onions. In medium mixing bowl, combine eggs, milk, pepper and salt. Pour egg mixture over potato mixture in dish. (If not freezing, cover and chill several house or overnight, then follow serving day suggestions.) Freeze.

Serving day instructions:
Thaw completely. Bake uncovered in a 350-degree oven for 40-45 minutes or until center appears set. Let stand 5 minutes before serving. If you prefer extra shredded cheese can be sprinkled on top during the last 15 minutes of baking.

Tackle It Tuesday #4 (GLH's Closet)

My first Tackle- it-Tuesday post was tackling my daughter's room with the intentions of tackling her closet in the near future...since we were iced in for the last three days, I have my laundry caught up and the house pretty well cleaned. So last night, I emptied out her closet and gathered all of the supplies I had purchased to start on her closet...well I had to go back to Home Depot because I had the wrong size shelves and brackets. Oh well...after all that...

Today my tackle is to put everything back into her closet- organized since my sweet hubby installed the closet organizer. And we have another day where we don't have any place to be this evening because school was canceled due to the ice storm, therefore, most of our evening activities have been canceled as well and I can keep working until her closet is finished!

Here is the before picture:

Here is her room after everything has been removed from her closet...I can't believe there was that much in her closet!

Here is the completed project...We added two bars for clothing, one high for things that she doesn't wear that often, her dance cosutmes, etc. and one lower for the clothes that she wears on a regular bases. There is room to add more. There are three shelves and one more that I haven't installed yet. I still need to go through some of the rubbermaid boxes that I put back in her closet and sort the barbie clothes (there are 2 boxes that I need to go through) I moved her Barbie dolls to the back of her door and moved from her door to the closet to hang her dance bag and baton bag on each day. I put together her Bitty Baby storage chest, it's in the closet as well. We purged 3 Barbie doll vehicles and kept only 2...the pink convertible and the gray VW Bug. It looks so much better and more organized...and it's only 10:30 am! What else am I going to tackle today??? I added a small to-do list below the pictures.

To-Do Today....

  1. Update registration form on CMSL website.
  2. Update teams registered.
  3. Go to the bank.
  4. Clean off my desk.
  5. Tackle hot-spots through out the house...LR, Hallway and Bedroom.
  6. Put sheets on boys bed.
  7. Wash GLH's sheets and make her bed.
  8. List for OAMC (Shop Wed AM)
  9. Dishes. Had boys put them in the dishwasher while I went to the bank! Smart Mom!
  10. ??????

Menu Plan Monday-Week of Jan 15

Tuesday(Dance-Work, Soccer Meeting & Basketball)-Whatever we can find when we get home! Really! Might be breakfast for dinner night!

Wednesday(Dance and Connor's Birthday)-Macaroni Grill for Birthday Dinner with Grandparents and Aunt She-She

Thursday (OAMC exchange)-Corned Beef and Cabbage in Crockpot. I'm making Honey Pecan Chicken and a Farmer's Casserole for Freezer Exchange. I will post our list on Thursday.

Friday (Family Night)-Homemade Pizza and Salad

Saturday (Sleepover for Birthday)-3 foot Subway Sandwich, Chips and Cake

Check out what everyone else is having this week at Organizing Junkie...there are some really awesome ideas!

For Better Or For Worse (Dedication to Household Executive)

My friend, Mindi, posted (posted on Dec 16-can't get the link to work) a story on her blog about her boots...These's Boots Aren't Made For Walking...when I read this today in the comic section of the newspaper, I immediately thought of her. If you can't tell what's happening in the comic strip, she get's dressed for dinner in her stylish, very, high-heeled boots, you see her slippy all over the sidewalk and being helped into the restaurant, they eat dinner and her husband (or boyfriend) stops and drops them into a goodwill box. Here is website for the full soap opera For Better or For Worse by Lynn Johnston It's quite an interesting story line...in Friday or Saturday's clip a girlfriend confronted her boyfriend at another woman's home!

Clutter...Why It's Good!!!!???????

I came across this article on another post...I highlighted the areas that really struck me. I am a messy person by nature but have such a need for organization...my house runs so much smoother when things are organized. So I'm not sure why I'm a messy person...It's a very interesting article. Tell me what you think!

Clutter: New book strikes a blow against the cult of über organization
By Valerie Finholm
THE HARTFORD COURANT
01/10/2007

Every year, you make the same resolutions. You're going to lose weight and keep the house clean. No more backpacks, coats and shoes strewn across the living-room floor; no beds unmade or socks unmatched.

Not so fast, say Eric Abrahamson and David H. Freedman, authors of the new book "A Perfect Mess: The Hidden Benefits of Disorder (How Crammed Closets, Cluttered Offices, and On-the-Fly Planning Make the World a Better Place)."

The authors claim that if you're moderately disorganized — that is, you scatter things, mix things around, let things pile up, do things out of order, be inconsistent and wing it — you're probably more efficient, resilient, creative and in general more effective than someone who is highly organized.

"The fact of the matter is there are a lot of things to like about being messy that have been hugely ignored," Freedman says in a telephone interview from his home in Boston.

The authors pooh-pooh the notion that they're just slackers trying to justify their own bad habits.

Abrahamson is a professor of management at Columbia University's School of Business who has written an academic paper on the benefits of messiness, and Freedman is a business and science journalist who has written for publications such as the Atlantic Monthly and Newsweek. Freedman says the book is based on hundreds of sources, including surveys and numerous interviews with people — messy and neat.

The book's most compelling argument for the benefits of messiness and disorder is that they save people time and make them more efficient.

"There are people who spend all day keeping things in their places who really wish they had time to do other things," Freedman says. "But they feel obligated to do this."

As for the office, a survey done by the authors found that people who say they keep a "very neat" desk at work spend an average of 36 percent more time looking for things than people who say they keep a "fairly messy" desk.

"That's because it takes time to put every paper in its place in a filing cabinet or folder," Freedman says, whereas messy people tend to put things in "surprisingly sophisticated" piles that they can easily access.

The authors also found that a messy house is more nurturing to children, "who by their nature love a mess." Freedman says he interviewed many middle-age people who grew up in antiseptic homes and who "still remembered being screamed at for running across the carpet or leaving a glass someplace."

Freedman — who acknowledges that he and his wife are "a bit on the messy side" — says he first became interested in the benefits of disorder while writing a magazine article about a physics professor who discovered that certain kinds of scientific systems worked better if you made them messier.

Freedman wondered whether this theory might apply to the home and office as well, and he teamed up with Abrahamson to investigate the topic.

Freedman says they found that messiness hasn't always had a bad image.

"They didn't even have a word for it until the 19th century," he says.

That changed in Victorian times, when people began to accumulate nice things and wanted to keep them perfectly clean, he says. Then, with the invention of appliances, he says, cleanliness "got really, really out of control."

That led to the growth of today's "professional organizers."

Freedman says these organizers operate on the premise that most people have a lot of "neatening" to do, "a job that requires a big commitment — expertise, a large block of time and an array of paraphernalia."

"Organizers reassure the clients that they'll ultimately be much happier having gotten rid of their stuff," he says. "But is it really true that people won't regret getting rid of some items that are cast out in the name of straightening up?

"In fact, all kinds of wonderful, valuable and useful things get thrown out in the name of organizing. Almost anyone over the age of 40 has had the experience of realizing with a pang that their childhood collections of baseball cards or comic books or Barbie dolls would be worth a fortune today, never mind their sentimental value."

Barry Izsak, president of the National Association of Professional Organizers and the author of "Organize Your Garage in No Time," disputes Freedman's contention that an organizer's main goal is to give things the heave-ho.

Organize Your Garage...In No Time

"Most organizers' mantra is that we don't throw anything away. The client needs to make that decision," says Izsak, owner of Arranging It All ... From Your Closets to Your Life, an Austin, Texas, company that guarantees clients will be able to find anything in their home or office within five seconds. Freedman says he has nothing against neat people but still wonders: "What are you getting out of it, really?"

He says clutter-free homes don't say much about the people who live in them: "While in a messy house, things are lying around that you don't necessarily want visitors to see, they give a sense of the family that lives there."

I had to laugh about the last statement! When my house is messy, I know what sense it tells me and I'm sure it's telling visitors the same thing! As a messy, are you now more incline to not clean up because it means that you are a creative, more effective and resilient? Are you in the present state of nurturing your children and if you keep a clean house it says you aren't nurturing your child?

I am a messy by nature but after reading this article...I still so much want to be a really organize person! I hate clutter...I have been purging and throwing things away and it feels really good! I haven't missed anything that I have thrown away...but I'm not going to throw anything away that has sentimental value to me. What I have noticed about having areas organize and simplified is that when it gets a little messy....it's much easier to pick up and put back in order because there isn't all of the clutter that is getting in my way!

So....by nature what are you? Are you a messy person or do you thrive on order? Take my poll:

Friday's Feast or Freezing Friday

This week's Friday' s Feast has turned into a Freezing Friday...freezing rain is expected all week, turning into snow and sleet by Sunday...yuck! My whole weekend has been ruined! Hopefully, it won't be as bad as predicted.

Here's my Friday's Feast...

Appetizer:

What comes to mind when you see the color orange? My boys bedroom. It's painted in bright orange and yellow. I posted pictures of their room on Two Peas in a Bucket...here's the Link It's really orange and fun!

Soup:

Did you ever get in trouble while you were in school? If so, what was it for?

Yes...do I have to tell you what for? I got in trouble (won't say why) and suspended from school and kicked off the cheer leading squad!

Salad:

Which topping(s) make up your perfect pizza?

Bacon, Garlic Butter Sauce from Papa John's and banana peppers ...I love pepperoni, bacon and Canadian bacon pizza on thin crust. Yummy!

Main Course:

Do you believe in UFOs/aliens/etc.? Why or why not?

No I don't believe in UFOs or aliens. I think the unknown comes from God not from aliens!

Dessert:

What color is your bedspread/comforter/quilt?

My duvet cover is in a light blue. My room is accented in navy, white and yellow. I'm redoing my duvet cover because I got some bleach spots on it when I washed it...I'm using pieces from the duvet cover and making a quilt like cover with yellows, navy blues, light blue and cranberry red. Should be pretty...I will post a picture when it's completed!

Works-for-Me Wednesday #3 (Loaded Baked Potato Soup)

This weeks WFM is about Eating Well. I am in a freezer co-op and I make a Loaded Baked Potato Soup which is yummy, yummy, yummy. I started Weight Watchers and in the Weight Watcher's Magazine November/December 2006 they have a Loaded Baked Potato Soup recipe that counts as 3 points! The recipe is basically the same as the recipe that I use for the OAMC. I love being able to eat something yummy and not forgo the taste. Enjoy...

Loaded Baked Potato Soup

Hands on Prep Time 20 minutes

Cook: 1 hour 10 minutes

Serves 12

4 medium baking potatoes, scrubbed

4 strips center-cut reduced-fat bacon

2 onions, chopped

4 garlic cloves, minced

1 (12-ounce) can evaportated skim milk

1/4 cup all-purpose flour

2 (14 1/2 ounce) cans reduced-sodium chicken broth

1/4 teaspoon red pepper sauce

1/2 cup light sour cream

1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese

1/2 teapsoon salt

1/4 teaspoon freshly ground pepper

1 cup shredded reduced-fat sharp cheddar cheese

2 scallions, finely chopped

  1. Preheat the oven to 400 degrees. Prick potatoes all around with a fork. Place on the overn rack and bake until tender when pierced with the tip of a knife, about 1 hour. Let the potatoes stand until cool enough to handle, about 20 minutes. Peel the potatoes, cut 2 into 1/4-inch dice. Transfer the remaining 2 potatoes to a bowl and coarsely mash. Stire in the diced potatoes.

  2. Meanwhile, heat a large nonstick Dutch overn over medium heat. Add the bacon and cook, turning occasionally, utnil crips, 4-5 minutes. Transfer with tongs to a plate lined with paper towels; drain. Crumble the bacon and set aside. Add the onions and garlic to the drippings in the Dutch oven; cook, stirring occasionally, until the onions begin to brown, 5-6 mintues.

  3. Combine the evaportaed milk and flour in a medium bowl, beating with a whisk until smoothe. Add the milk mixutre, broth, potatoes, and pepper sauce to the Dutch overn; increase the heat and bring to a simmer. Reduce the heat and cook, stirring, until the soup is thick and creamy, 6-7 minutes.

  4. Remove the Dutch oven from the heat; stir in the sour cream, Parmesan cheese, salt and ground pepper. Divide the soup among 12 bowls; top each serving with the cheddar cheese, scallions, and reserved bacon. Serve at once.

If your tste buds gravitate toward the spicier side, increase the red pepper sauce to 1/2 teapoon in step 3.

Enjoy and remember its' only 3 Points if you are on Weight Watchers. For more, heatly recipe, check out Rocks in My Dryer

Weightloss Wednesday #1 1.10.07

I'm joining in on another challenge, Two Moms in a Blog has a challenge called Weightloss Wendesday. Since one of my goals for the new year & on my 40 before 40 list is to lose 50-75 lbs, I thought that this would be a good challenge for me to join! Wednesday's are also my weigh in days for Weight Watchers so this works perfect for me!

So, here is my first Weightloss Wednesday check in!

My Starting Weight: 193 lbs

My Goal Weight: 125 lbs

My Weight today: 187.6

I am amazed...I actually loss weight during the Christmas vacation! Only 1 pound but at least I didn't gain! Yeah for me!

I'm a little nervous about this weigh in because the last three weeks, I haven't been tracking what I'm eating and I haven't been to the gym because of Christmas vacation. So I'm really hoping that I maintained...not gained anything but I'm NOT counting on it!

My one goal for January is to start drinking more water each day...I don't like the taste of water and drink only Diet Dr Pepper everyday. So this is a big BIG challenge for me. I honestly believe that if I could get past this I would lose some of my weight rather easy!

Tackle It Tuesday #3 (My Car!)

Tackle It Tuesday Meme

Okay, I'm rather embarrassed to post what I'm tackling today...it's really bad....it has never looked this bad...I really can't show these pictures....oh well...here is the embarrassing picture of...my car looks like a bomb has gone off in it and this is what I'm tackling today...it is also on my January To-Do List so I get to remove an item after I get it completed! Yeah for me!...yes this is the car from the "Works for Me" Blogger that has the glove compartment organizer....

There's dance bags, shoes, markers and kleenexes that need to be picked up....

Backpacks that need to go into the house...newspapers that need to be recyled...

Pretty bad huh?

Tackling Steps:

  1. Remove trash-take trash bag to car.

  2. Remove all clothes & shoes, take to laundry or to owners room. (major improvement by just doing steps 1 & 2!)

  3. Vacuum with shop vac...floors and seats.

  4. Wipe down dashboard and seats with Armour All wipes for vinyl & leather.

  5. Take to get washed!

Here is the final project all completed:

Now doesn't that look much better! It's feels much better! I just love Tackle it Tuesdays!

Organizing Tips for Car:

In addition to cleaning out the car, I reorganized/cleaned out the baskets in my car. I have 3 baskets-1. Has CDs, DVDs, extra deoderant, sunscreen, hand lotion, my husband's "do you have it"kit (which has chapstick, advil, rolaids, fingernail clippers), scizzors, etc., little trash bags and snacks like cereal bars 2. Has cordless headphones for the entertainment system for the car & remote control and 3. has video games that don't require an electrical outlet for the DVD system (they run on batteries and just hook into the DVD source in the back). I also have a rubbermaid box in the back of my car that houses paper plates, a roll of paper towels, first aid kit, car emergency kit, & plastic forks/spoons/knives. I have all of these things stored in my car because as a traveling soccer/dance/baton family we will stop at the grocery store instead of going to a fast food restaurant and get items for sandwiches and it saves me from having to buy these items everytime. It has come in handy many, many times. During the winter month I have an extra box with blankets in it for soccer games as well as our portable chairs.

Here is basket #1:

Menu Monday-1.8.07-Upated

Happy Monday! This week is a clean out the freezer week, my food co-op group meets next Monday for our exchange so I want to make room for those meals as well as the side of beef that my in-laws gave us for Christmas (my in-laws are cattle ranchers and we usually get a side of beef each year for Christmas-it's a lifesaver for our big family!). I need to plan our meals around our evening activities so this week we are having:

Monday (Dance, Soccer, Basketball)-BBQ Pork Sandwiches
Tuesday (Dance & Basketball)-Chicken Drumsticks (in crockpot)
Wednesday-Pork Tenderloin
Thursday (Dance)-Italian Crockpot Chicken (also grocery day)
Friday-Rueben Sandwiches and Soup

Be sure to check out everyone's menus on at I'm an Organizing Junkie's website!

I had a request for the Italian Crockpot Chicken Recipe...here it is:

Italian Crock Pot Chicken
4 boneless, skinless chicken breasts (whole or cut into bite-sized pieces)
1 can cream of chicken soup
1/2 stick BUTTER
1 env. dry italian dressing mix
1 (8oz) pkg cream cheese, room temperature

Melt butter, pour over chicken in crock pot. Sprinkle with dry italian dressing mix. Cover, and cook for 4 hours.

Blend soup and cream cheese, pour over chicken.* Cook additional 1/2 hour. Serve over angel hair pasta.

*when I add the soup and cheese, I take the chicken out, stir the soup/cheese into the pot contents, and return the chicken for the last 1/2 hr.

Psalms Sunday #1 (Psalms 1)

Each Sunday, I will be joining Butterfly Kisses as we read and explore the book of Psalms for Psalms Sunday. Here are the details from Butterfly Kisses post regarding Psalms Sunday:

"Each Sunday I will pick one or two Psalms (depending on length). If you would like to take part, after reading the Psalms, share in a post whatever you would like in regards to what you read. For example, what did you think of it? What does it mean to you? Do you have a story behind it? Can you teach us something about it? Do you relate to a portion of it? What verse from it spoke to you the most?"

My mediation for this week is short (I just discovered Psalms Sunday this morning!)

For January 7, we were to read and mediated on Psalms 1. The verse that really stuck with me was Psalms 1:3:

"He shall be like a tree

Planted by the rivers of water,

That brings forth its fruit in its season,

Whose leaf also shall not wither;

And whatever he does shall prosper."

The year 2007 is a year one of my main goals is to be planted firmly in God's words so that my relationships, my home, and my work will bring forth fruit and prosper. As I start this next week, this will be the verse that I mediate on each day to encourage me and motivate me.

"Lord, please help me to be firmly planted in your word each day so that my relationships, my household and my job will prosper and not wither. Amen."

2007 Daily Routines & Schedule for Misti

Last week was not a good week for the start of a new year. I usually get really motived and excited to start a new year and a new me but last week, I was really busy working (League Commissioner for CMSL) that I didn't have time to start my new routine and schedule for the new year...or at least what I would like my day to look like. Below is what I would like my day to look like:

6:00 AM Wake-Shower & Dress
6:30 AM Breakfast with CSH (he catches the bus at 6:50AM)
6:50 AM Daily Devotion & Prayer (not an intense Bible Study or Quiet Time-just a little pick me up devotion & prayer to start my day!)
7:00 AM Wake up CWH, GLH and SJH-help get them ready for school, their bus arrives around 7:45AM.
8:00 AM Workout...leave for the gym after the bus picks up the kiddos. Except on Thursdays b/c of Bible Study.
9:30 AM Morning chores and activities. On Wednesday-Weight Watchers meeting.
11:30 AM Eat Lunch while reading emails.
12:00 PM Bible Study
1:00 PM Afternoon chores and activities
3:00 PM Pack for dance, soccer, etc.
3:30 PM Leave to pick up kids from school for evening activities.

I think if I could stick to this daily routine, I will get my goals for 2007 accomplished!

Friday's Feast #3

Appetizer:

Which celebrity (or celebrities) do you think will make headlines this year?

Let's see, I'm sure that we will see Brangelina, Jennifer Aniston, Tomkat and Britney Spears in the headlines this year. I'm sure that Paris Hilton will be there as well.

Soup:

They say that good things come in small packages? What is something little that you think is great?

Well-I'm not really a chocolate person or a huge jewelry fan. So, I'm going to say the smell of a new Longaberger basket. They don't come in small packages but if they could figure out how to bottle up the smell in a candle or a spray of some sort, it would come in a small package. I love opening a box of baskets and smelling them! I know I'm wierd!

Salad:

Name a song that makes you want to dance.

Hung Up by Madonna. I really love the 70s disco beat that the song has and it makes me want to dance.

Main Course:

What is your favorite font?

I have 2 favorite fonts...verdana and CK's Journaling font. I use the verdana fonts for most of my documents and the journaling font if I want something fun or for scrapbooking.

Dessert:

If you were to write a do-it-yourself article, what would it be about?
I'm working on de-cluttering and organizing my home, one baby-step at a time. So I would have to say it's would be about organizing my home.

Change Me, Lord!

As I read my devotion this morning, from Stormie Omartian's "The Power of a Praying Wife," the first thing that I read that hit me hard was...."Change Me, Lord!" Change me? What? What about those who need to change? Why me? Hereis why... Here is my prayer and my conversation with God:

In Psalms 66:18, you say if I regard iniquity in my heart, You will not hear me. I want my heart to be right so my prayers will be answered-not compromised.

Lord, I confess to you and ask you to forgive me for being irresposible, for being angry about things that I can not control, for seeking revenge to those who have hurt or wronged me in some way. I don't want to be a bitter person anymore. Lord, please set me free from anything that is not of You. I desire to live a life Your way-by forgiving, by showing kindness and love to those who I come into contact with each and everyday. Help me to let go of the past and all of the hurt associated with it. Whatever You want, Lord. Show me and I'll do it. Change me. Lord.

2007 New Year's Meditations

During the month of December, I did a lot of reflecting on the year 2006. God revealed to me areas in my life that need some type of change, either for the good or for the bad. Some of those areas were very obvious and some weren't. I also have admired those who keep a regular journal, I have a prayer journal that I started about 5 1/2 years ago, there isn't very much in there. My biggest goal this year is to journal every day, this is were my blog comes in. I really have enjoyed journaling and writing using my blog as a medium. I appreciate the words of encouragement and support that my family and friends (as well as other bloggers that I haven't meet) have given me regarding my journal. In the past, I usually think about my goals for a new year in my head and never really write them down, that away I'm not held accountable if I don't achieve those goals no one will know and I won't know because I didn't write down what my goals were! Writing it in my blog will give me some accountability for those goals.

I have divided my goals in areas of most important to least important. The areas of change that I'm hoping to achieve in the year 2007 are Spiritual, Relationships, Physical, Financial and Daily Living. They all are important but I think without the previous the other doesn't mean anything.

Spiritual
My spiritual goals are to have a daily devotion when I first get up, this means that I need to get to bed early enough so I'm not getting up just before I need to wake up the kids to get them ready for school! I would like to start each day by reading a devotion. After I get the kids to school and do my morning chores and activities, I would like to have a more intense study and quiet time each day. I honestly believe that God is telling me that I don't spend enough time with him each day. With out this important time with him everything else in my life doesn't get blessed. I'm not saying that I haven't been blessed, I have been blessed but I want to honestly say that God blessed every aspect of my life, my family, my home, my career....The most important goal for me for 2007 is to give God every area of my life and I truly believe that my other goals will be so easy to achieve.
Relationships
I really need to work on relationships. I have people in my life that I haven't extended grace to, forgiven them or asked for their forgiveness, or made an effort to help our relationship grow. One goal for 2007 is a goal for my marriage. My husband and I have 4 children, our oldest is almost 14 and our youngest will be 6 in June, and we don't spend anytime together as a couple. This year, I will like for us to find time in our schedule to schedule a date night at least once a month-two times would be great but I want to set a goal that I might be able to keep! I also think that it is important that I spend time with each of my children by themselves...like take CSH out for a subway sandwich and a drink and spend time talking with him about...yes...since he is almost 14...the birds and the bees, about his dreams for his future, about being a gentleman and most important talk with him about his faith. My husband needs to take his daughters' out on "dates". We need to nourish our relationships this year by spending time with those we love.
Physical
This next area in my life is a big struggle for me...one I never had a struggle with...my weight. I never had to diet growing up and truly that was a blessing as a teenager to not have a weight problem. I could eat whatever I wanted and I didn't have to worry about it! That's not the case any more, after four children, my metabolism is very different then it was as a teenager. I feel miserable about the extra weight. I am at the point in my life that I refuse to buy the next size jeans....size 14 is as big as I am willing to go. I will wear them even if I have to unbutton the top button and be miserable....I refuse to buy clothes any bigger than that! BUT I have to make some changes which include exercising each day, drinking more water (I drink ONLY Dt Dr Pepper) and watching what I eat as well as the portions. I know that I will feel much better about myself if I can start to add these elements into my daily routine. I would love to lose the 50 (75 pounds would be better) by the end of 2007 but I am willing to settle for achieving the goal of working out on a regular basis and drinking more water. I think the weight will come off very easy if these two elements are in my daily routine.
Financial
I told my husband on New Year's Eve that this was going to be a very good year for us! This year I am going to have all, yes all, of our bills paid off (this doesn't include the house...so I guess not all of them!). Each year we get a nice tax refund and I blow it on stuff... this year I am going to get the carpet paid off that I should have paid off 2 years ago with our tax refund. So I am giving my finances to God each day and asking him to keep me from being self-indulgence and to remind me daily that if I'm going to achieve this financial goal that I need to be frugal and not spend money to be spending money. To help with this goal, I have set our family on a $500 a month food budget. I think I can stay within this budget by using coupons, which I purchased a binder and have my coupons organized, being better at planning a weekly menu. I have noticed that our food expenses have gone down since I joined a Freezer Co-op. So menu planning, using coupons and not eating out will help us to stay in our monthly budget and to help me achieve this financial goal for 2007!
Daily Living
Last area-daily living...this means, my household is organized and clutter free . In a previous post, I wrote about a book that I have been reading-"The Warm and Welcome Home" and what caught my attention the most was that God is a God of order! I would be embarrassed if God knocked on my door and asked to come to dinner! Or better yet, God can see in our closets...even if no one else can! My goal for 2007 is to take baby steps into getting every area of my home in order! I want to be able to welcome God and anyone else who knocks on my door into my home! More importantly for my family! The home should be a save haven that builds up my family, a place where communication is ongoing and creativity flows. This can't happen if my home isn't warm and welcome for my family. This means keeping the house clean, the launry done, the kitchen in order, the pantry and the frig full, the bed made, etc.
These are my goals for 2007. Check back often as I blog about my goals and if I have achieved any of them. I will be excited to see how much of them I have achieved when I reflect in December. Good luck to each of you who have set goals or made resolutions for the New Year.
Original Post (12/30/06)
I came across another bloggers post Sting My Heart about a great idea for 2007! Her blogging friend has posted this idea:

"I would like you to post on your site about your hopes, dreams, goals, for the next year. What would you like to see God do in your life? How would you like to see Him move in things? make this as general or as personal as you feel comfortable. What are your goals for the next year? I am not looking for the "lose 10lbs this year" answer, something a little bit deeper. When you look back December 2007, where would you like to be? Many of us look forward to new changes in the new year, some of use dread the changes. Changes are sometimes good , sometimes dreaded and sometimes dreamed. What is your change or dream for this next year?" From
Laurel Wreath

This was really inspiring...I always reflect and think about things that I would like to do differently the next year. But never really thought deeply about those changes, I make a list and lose the next the next week because already broke those resolutions! I'm going to think about my hopes, my dreams, and my goals for 2007 and will post those next year (right now I need to finish the Futsal-indoor soccer schedule!)

Works for Me Wednesdays #2 (Glove Compartment Car Organizer)

I have in my glove compartment a small accordion file. I store everything you need for the road , registration and insurance information, emergency contact numbers, maps, and directions (file them instead of having to rewrite them every time-we travel a lot for soccer/dance/baton & I have all of the my mapquest directions in the file).
Each tab is labeled. I currently have:
1. Registration
2. Insurance
3. Maintenance
4. Directions
5. Receipts (major maintenance)
6. I'm going to add a little phone book with all my important numbers & addresses in it.
Works for me! For more great ideas visit Rocks in My Dryer Check out some of the past WFMW posts as well!
